The system is determined in part by physiographic\nand hydrographic conditions. But because of the need\nfor close cooperation in operating and maintaining the system it\nalso is bound up with the history and socio-cultural organization\nof Lannathai villages. This article examines the irrigation\nsystem both from technological and from socio-cultural points\nof view, drawing upon field data obtained in Nong Paman village,\nMae Rim district, Chiang Mai prefecture, in 1975.\nThe author first sketches the physiography and ecology\nof the Chiang Mai basin in so far as these have bearing upon\nthe cultivation of wet-rice. He gives particular attention to\nnative categories of habitat and paddy field. He then classifies\nthe types of irrigation systems, and describes the development of\nirrigated agriculture in this basin since the reign of King\nMangraimaharat in the 13th century.\nNext the discussion focuses upon the irrigation system of\nNang Paman village. After describing wet-rice farming procedures\nthe author provides an account of the structure and\noperation of the fai (weirs) and muang (canals) used to irrigate\nthe four paddy areas in the village. The farmers of each paddy\narea-including farmers from other villages-are organized\ninto a traditional irrigation control group, or mufti, under anirrigation headman, or huana m itangf e ll.\nThe irrigation control groups have two main activities :\n1) to allocate the distribution of water to members\u0027 fields, and\n2) to make annual repairs to the system. The weirs in particular\noften need repairing since they are constructed of low-durability\nstakes (lak fai) of ton tiing (Dipterocarpus tuberculatus) and ton sak\n(Tectona grandis).\nSince the Mae Rim river supplies ample water during the\nmain part of the growing season, virtually no problems arise over\nthe allocation of water to members\u0027 fields. Thus the major\ntask of the mu f di groups is that of coordinating labor and\nmaterials for annual repairs to the system. Cooperation among\nmembers is further enhanced through feasts and f ai spirit rituals.\nThe author suggests that these highly cooperative irrigation\ncontrol groups may be an example of \"tight
