内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This paper, based on field research in two villages of the
Republic of Mali, outlines the relations between the socio-economic
and religious changes among the Bozo fishermen of the
Niger River.
The Bozo were the first settlers of the so-called Niger Inner
Delta, and their habits of life and thought have been strongly
influenced by their specialization as fishermen.
Bozo worldviews are preserved in the rituals connected with
the water spirits, who, according to them, live in water and are
the real owners of land and water. Bozo myths and legends
say that their first ancestors fell in contact with these spirits, who
allowed them to occupy the land and to catch fish on the condition
that they would carry out annual sacrifices. Their descendants,
who are called jii tu, "owners of the water", continue to do so
for the purpose of renewing this alliance with the water spirits;
they also accomplish some social and religious activities that
are considered to be indispensable for the maintenance of village
life.
But the changes during the past thirty years have been so
great that not only the mode of life of the Bozo but also their
mode of thought have been deeply influenced. Perplexed by
these changes, some jii tu have decided to abandon their annual
sacrifices to the water spirits and to embrace Islam. This
decision has thrown other villagers into confusion, and they,
in turn, have been obliged to find a means of reorganizing their
ways of thought and life.
