Bozo myths and legends\nsay that their first ancestors fell in contact with these spirits, who\nallowed them to occupy the land and to catch fish on the condition\nthat they would carry out annual sacrifices. Their descendants,\nwho are called jii tu, \"owners of the water\", continue to do so\nfor the purpose of renewing this alliance with the water spirits;\nthey also accomplish some social and religious activities that\nare considered to be indispensable for the maintenance of village\nlife.\nBut the changes during the past thirty years have been so\ngreat that not only the mode of life of the Bozo but also their\nmode of thought have been deeply influenced. Perplexed by\nthese changes, some jii tu have decided to abandon their annual\nsacrifices to the water spirits and to embrace Islam.
