| 内容記述 | Some historical publications during the 1970-80's have brought a great quantity of new knowledge and value-free viewpoints to the still embryonic Chicano studies. With these contributions in mind, the author presents major aspects of Chicano history, a completely new subject in Japan. The first chapter delineates the processes by which Mexicans came to be categorized as an ethnic people: 1) Spanish and Mexican periods, 1540-1848; 2) confrontation with Anglos, mid-19th century to 20th century; and 3) increase of Mexican immigrants and their protest movements, 20th century to 1950. The second chapter describes the movements promoted by four political leaders in the 1960's: Cesar Chavez, Corky Gonzales, Jose Angel Gutierres, and Reies Tijerina. Emphasis is given to the reporting and interpretation of the political upheaval of Tijerina and the Alianza in New Mexico, where the author carried out fieldwork in the 1970's. The third chapter provides up-to-date facts on the alliance of the hispanics, since the author takes the view that this new alliance is a form of sublimating Chicano power. |
