With these\ncontributions in mind, the author presents major aspects of\nChicano history, a completely new subject in Japan.\nThe first chapter delineates the processes by which Mexicans\ncame to be categorized as an ethnic people: 1) Spanish and\nMexican periods, 1540-1848; 2) confrontation with Anglos,\nmid-19th century to 20th century; and 3) increase of Mexican\nimmigrants and their protest movements, 20th century to 1950.\nThe second chapter describes the movements promoted by\nfour political leaders in the 1960's: Cesar Chavez, Corky Gonzales,\nJose Angel Gutierres, and Reies Tijerina.
