内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Korean culture is deeply based on Confucianism. This
influence is seen not only in ancestor worship, but also in the
sphere of daily life, such as in human relations, and especially
in relationships among the family and in kinship.
Yet in recent years, with the progress of modernization and
industrialization, Korean society is experiencing a sudden change.
A parallel, major change in people's values can be observed.
At present, traditional culture based on Confucianism and
modern culture are in competition, yet both can coexist, as
demonstrated by the heightened interest in maintaining Confucianistic
ancestor rites.
In this paper I present an example of the changes in
Korean ancestor rites, and, by a statistical survey, demonstrate
changes in Korean society.
First, ideas on seasonal rituals (sije), holiday rites (ch'arye)
and death day rites (kije) in the traditional culture are presented.
An example of changes in each rite is then examined. Changes
can be observed in the weakening of the function of patrilineal
lineage (munjung) influence in the seasonal rituals, the changes
in holiday rites from third cousin agnates (tangnae) to the limited
intimacy of siblings, and changes in the death day rites, including
the object of worship, the person who is responsible, and the
participants.
The background of these changes in Korean society is then
examined.
1. Lifestyle has been modernized by urbanization and
industrialization, and, as a result, traditional rites do
not suit the modern lifestyle. There is a tendency to
simplify the rituals. At the same time, the phenomenon
of the traditional rites as adopted by the modern family
can be examined;
2. Due to the spread of Christianity, there has been either
an avoidance or a modification of rites. In particular
there a large number of Christian females, and the role
of these women must be considered as they must handle
the troublesome preparations for traditional rites;
3. In contrast to these modern movements is the movement
for preservation of tradition or reconfirmation of
tradition ;
To both examplify and assess the degree of such change,
I surveyed the conditions and attitudes of the Korean middle
class in city apartments and group housing. The group has
absorbed the burden of modernization. The results show the
current conditions and attitudes which led to the simplification
of ancestor ties in the rites. There is also a conservative desire
to preserve tradition, but, at the same time, there is a diversification
of values. This phenomenon reflects the diversification
and confusion of values in modern Korean society.
