This\ninfluence is seen not only in ancestor worship, but also in the\nsphere of daily life, such as in human relations, and especially\nin relationships among the family and in kinship.\nYet in recent years, with the progress of modernization and\nindustrialization, Korean society is experiencing a sudden change.\nA parallel, major change in people's values can be observed.\nAt present, traditional culture based on Confucianism and\nmodern culture are in competition, yet both can coexist, as\ndemonstrated by the heightened interest in maintaining Confucianistic\nancestor rites.\nIn this paper I present an example of the changes in\nKorean ancestor rites, and, by a statistical survey, demonstrate\nchanges in Korean society.\nFirst, ideas on seasonal rituals (sije), holiday rites (ch'arye)\nand death day rites (kije) in the traditional culture are presented.\nAn example of changes in each rite is then examined. Changes\ncan be observed in the weakening of the function of patrilineal\nlineage (munjung) influence in the seasonal rituals, the changes\nin holiday rites from third cousin agnates (tangnae) to the limited\nintimacy of siblings, and changes in the death day rites, including\nthe object of worship, the person who is responsible, and the\nparticipants.\nThe background of these changes in Korean society is then\nexamined.\n1. Lifestyle has been modernized by urbanization and\nindustrialization, and, as a result, traditional rites do\nnot suit the modern lifestyle. There is a tendency to\nsimplify the rituals. At the same time, the phenomenon\nof the traditional rites as adopted by the modern family\ncan be examined;\n2. Due to the spread of Christianity, there has been either\nan avoidance or a modification of rites. In particular\nthere a large number of Christian females, and the role\nof these women must be considered as they must handle\nthe troublesome preparations for traditional rites;\n3. In contrast to these modern movements is the movement\nfor preservation of tradition or reconfirmation of\ntradition ;\nTo both examplify and assess the degree of such change,\nI surveyed the conditions and attitudes of the Korean middle\nclass in city apartments and group housing. The group has\nabsorbed the burden of modernization. The results show the\ncurrent conditions and attitudes which led to the simplification\nof ancestor ties in the rites. There is also a conservative desire\nto preserve tradition, but, at the same time, there is a diversification\nof values.
