内容記述 | The main purpose of this paper is to describe the phonological systems of three dialects of Pwo Karen which are spoken in Burma, and which had not been previously described. The dialects described in this paper are the languages of Kyonbyaw, a small delta town (one of the western dialects) , Hpa-an, the capital of the Karen State (an eastern dialect) and Tavoy, the capital of the Tenasserim Division of southern Burma (also an eastern dialect) . Since Pwo Karen (like other languages of the area) is a monosyllabic language, analysis of syllabic structure is the principal concern of works dealing with phonological description. The syllable structure of all of these dialects can be represented as Cl (C2) V1 (V2) (C3)/T, where C is a consonant, V is a vowel, and T is a tone. Cl is the initial, C2 the medial and C3 the final consonant. The combination of V1 (V2) (C3) is further referred to as the rhyme. All of these dialects possess omnisyllabic tone systems where the tones consist of bundles of prosodic features including phonation type, pitch and contour. The author worked consecutively on the Kyonbyaw and Hpa-an dialects from the latter half of 1993 to the first half of 1995. The work was carried out chiefly in Rangoon with some short-term fieldtrips to Kyonbyaw and Hpa-an. The research on the Tavoy dialect was made sporadically whenever the informant visited Rangoon. |
