Since\nPwo Karen (like other languages of the area) is a monosyllabic\nlanguage, analysis of syllabic structure is the principal concern of works\ndealing with phonological description.\nThe syllable structure of all of these dialects can be represented as\nCl (C2) V1 (V2) (C3)/T, where C is a consonant, V is a vowel, and T is\na tone. Cl is the initial, C2 the medial and C3 the final consonant. The\ncombination of V1 (V2) (C3) is further referred to as the rhyme. All of\nthese dialects possess omnisyllabic tone systems where the tones consist\nof bundles of prosodic features including phonation type, pitch and contour.\nThe author worked consecutively on the Kyonbyaw and Hpa-an\ndialects from the latter half of 1993 to the first half of 1995. The work\nwas carried out chiefly in Rangoon with some short-term fieldtrips to\nKyonbyaw and Hpa-an.
