内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The term of "computer ethnology" was given to one of
the research divisions of the National Museum of Ethnology.
Initially, this term was considered synonymous with computer
applications in ethnological studies, such as information retrieval,
image processing, text processing and the like, since computer.
power is necessary to treat a large number of data.
Parallel with the development of data processing systems,
the concept of computer ethnology has gradually changed
somewhat. Its main aim is the analysis of culture and the
comparison of civilizations by model-making and simulation
techniques, using the computer as a tool to amplify the human
ability to process data.
In this paper, the concept of culture and civilization is
defined quite differently from other usages, i.e., from the analogical
view of Chomsky's language theory, culture is defined as like
a deep structure, such as generative grammar and transformational
grammar, and civilization as like a surface structure,
such as sentences or texts. Culture is, therefore, a quite different
category from civilization, and not the primitive stage of
civilization.
Here the word "computer" is used symbolically to express
three meanings: (1) the method of making a model and applying
simulation using rigid algorithm; (2) an object whose development
is affected by culture and which has very important relations
with many systems in civilization; and (3) a tool to activate
a researcher's information processing ability.
This paper examines several other fundamental issues,
such as the structure of change, the cognitive aspect of analogy or
association, decision making by "beautifullness", and several
scales to compare the degree of civilization. It also discusses
information processing problems, particularly from the user
perspective, regarding the kind of computer systems that can
be expected in the field of human science.
