内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Among the inhabitants of Satawal, Central Caroline Islands,
the norm of avoidance behavior is strictly defined in particular
interpersonal relationships. This article attempts to clarify the
principal characteristics of Satawalese kinship behavior. The
fieldwork on which this paper is based was conducted from June
to September, 1978 and from May, 1979 to March, 1980.
Satawalese Society is composed of 8 yayinang (matrilineal,
exogamous, nonlocalized clans), segmented into 16 lineages.
Satawalese kinship terminology is a variant of the Hawaiian type.
Kin terms are used only in reference and personal names are used
in address. The relationship terms in use are :
Satawalese English
saam "father"
yiin "mother"
tukufityiy or mwâânennap "mother's brother"
pwii "same sex sibling"
mwengeyang "opposite sex sibling"
naay "child"
fateiw "sister's child"
kOzvui "brother-in-law"
Ides "sister-in-law"
punintiw "spouse"
It should be noted that the "line" which includes mother's brothers
and sister's children is distinguished from others.
The Satawalese distinguish three categories of avoidance
behavior : yepin me woon "it is taboo from above", pininmwengeyáng
"taboo between opposite sex siblings" , and kkepasepin" taboo word".
Yepin me woon consists of respect and avoidance patterns called
kkepaseyawaawa "respect words", yangeta me woon "restriction on
touching another's body", and yOppworo "stoop" or "crouch".
Pininmwengeyangis the taboo which prohibits a woman from using
a vessel from which her brother has drunk or has put his mouth to.
This taboo also prohibits a woman from touching baskets, mats and
clothes that her brother uses, and showing her unworn loinclothes
and the tattoo carved on her thighs. A brother and his sister are
forbidden to use sexual words with each other. Kkepasepin is the
taboo between men and women that forbids them state the names
of sexual organs or to talk about excretion.
The kin and affine categories affected by yepin me w OOnd iffer
among men and women. If ego is man, he must observe it against
tukufayiy, son of tukufayiy, pwii, who is older in relative age, and
kowur. If ego is a woman, she must observe it against mwengeyling,
pwii, who is older in relative age. Being concerned with pininmwengeyanga,
woman must mainly observe taboo against mwengeyang
