This article attempts to clarify the\nprincipal characteristics of Satawalese kinship behavior. The\nfieldwork on which this paper is based was conducted from June\nto September, 1978 and from May, 1979 to March, 1980.\nSatawalese Society is composed of 8 yayinang (matrilineal,\nexogamous, nonlocalized clans), segmented into 16 lineages.\nSatawalese kinship terminology is a variant of the Hawaiian type.\nKin terms are used only in reference and personal names are used\nin address. The relationship terms in use are :\nSatawalese English\nsaam \"father\"\nyiin \"mother\"\ntukufityiy or mwâânennap \"mother's brother\"\npwii \"same sex sibling\"\nmwengeyang \"opposite sex sibling\"\nnaay \"child\"\nfateiw \"sister's child\"\nkOzvui \"brother-in-law\"\nIdes \"sister-in-law\"\npunintiw \"spouse\"\nIt should be noted that the \"line\" which includes mother's brothers\nand sister's children is distinguished from others.\nThe Satawalese distinguish three categories of avoidance\nbehavior : yepin me woon \"it is taboo from above\", pininmwengeyáng\n\"taboo between opposite sex siblings\" , and kkepasepin\" taboo word\".\nYepin me woon consists of respect and avoidance patterns called\nkkepaseyawaawa \"respect words\", yangeta me woon \"restriction on\ntouching another's body\", and yOppworo \"stoop\" or \"crouch\".\nPininmwengeyangis the taboo which prohibits a woman from using\na vessel from which her brother has drunk or has put his mouth to.\nThis taboo also prohibits a woman from touching baskets, mats and\nclothes that her brother uses, and showing her unworn loinclothes\nand the tattoo carved on her thighs. A brother and his sister are\nforbidden to use sexual words with each other. Kkepasepin is the\ntaboo between men and women that forbids them state the names\nof sexual organs or to talk about excretion.\nThe kin and affine categories affected by yepin me w OOnd iffer\namong men and women. If ego is man, he must observe it against\ntukufayiy, son of tukufayiy, pwii, who is older in relative age, and\nkowur. If ego is a woman, she must observe it against mwengeyling,\npwii, who is older in relative age.
