| 内容記述 | The ritual of milking is one of the most important components of Mongolian pastoral culture. If we can make clear the meaning of that ritual, we can underdtand an important aspect of Mongolian pastoralism. Nowadays in Mongolia the milking rituals do not exist. But by reading and analyzing Mongolian prayers and the coments on them, we can reconstruct the milking rituals. The ceremony to declare the opening of the milking season is known as the ritual called "iirs gargax yos" in Mongolian language, which means "the ritual of getting seeds". Why is the ritual of getting "milk" called the ritual of getting "seeds" ? Is milk the symbol of seeds ? At the ceremony people blessed not all of mares' milk, but just the milk of mares which have just given birth for the first time. So we can understand that people celebrate the beginning of birth or the coming to maturity of those mares. That is the more important meaning of this ritual than the opening of the mares' milk season. In the case of cows and ewes, the words and sentences of the prayers are very similar to those for mares. And in some prayers the speakers declare that they bless the milk of cows which have just given birth for the first time. So clearly the main purpose of the rituals of the milking of cows and ewes is the same as the ritual of the milking of mares. While there is another type of milking ritual for ewes, the purpose of the Mongolian milking ritual called "ars gargax yos" is the praying for reproduction. And the word ars, that is seeds, represents descendants. By means of these rituals people pray for the increase of domestic animals. This main purpose of milking rituals in Mongolia may be entirely different from that of similar rituals in the Mediterranean region. |
