Whaling companies \nbegan to send factory fleets to the Antarctic Ocean in pursuit of a large supply \nof high-quality oil. One such company was Nippon Hogei, a Japanese whal\u0002ing company that was part of Nippon Sangyo (better known as the “Nissan \nGroup”), which sent a whaling fleet to the Antarctic grounds during the \n1934/35 season. This was noteworthy for two reasons: it was the first such \nwhaling voyage by a Japanese firm, and the company intended to enter the \nprofitable European whale oil market. For seven consecutive whaling seasons \nthrough to 1940/41, Japanese whalers placed little importance on producing \nAntarctic meat and blubber for human consumption.
