However, their studies only briefly discuss who the \n“Keren” (客人) or “Hakka” (客家) in the recorded texts of that time actually \nwere. This paper posits that the categories differ because the former are cul\u0002tural groups considered strangers or “guest people” by the locals while the \nlatter is an ethnic group categorized by outside observers using Western eth\u0002nological practices. The latter can be classified spatially on the map. I will attempt to illustrate how Christian missionaries depicted the characteristics of the Hakka people using ethnographic methods and how the Hakka elites \naccepted this categorization as their own identity.
