This \npaper examines how neighborhood relations are formed or not formed, with a \nfocus on the daily activities of villagers in rural Hubei. It provides detailed \nethnographic data of farm work and leisure activities, and argues that “gather\u0002ings” within the neighborhood have both a rational function of providing \nopportunities to exchange information on agriculture, as well as a casualaspect of social exchange.
