This paper \nexplores how gamelan instruments brought from Bali affect the performance \nand activity of Japanese gamelan players. Originally, Balinese gamelan music \nwas developed within Balinese religious and communal life. Its instruments \nare made for ready adaptation to such cultural and physical conditions. \nTherefore, when sent to Japan, they bring inexpedience in several ways. Toaccommodate and perform with such instruments, Japanese gamelan players \nstruggle to adjust their social and physical environment by conditioning the \nphysical layout, creating a new network for people, and compromising or \naltering their performance itself. In a sense, these instruments were taken \nfrom a Balinese human–object network and were brought to a new network in \nJapan.
