Timor-Leste is a nascent micronation that is\ncomposed of many ethnic groups and has a complex history. In the sixteen\nyears since its independence, the nation as well as its nationalism has been\nrapidly changing. Each chapter analyses this changing nationalism from a\ndifferent viewpoint. This chapter serves as an introduction and provides a\ngeneral summary of the distinctive features of nationalism in Timor-Leste.\nCasting Timor-Leste against the background of Indonesia provides two\nperspectives of nationalism in Timor-Leste. The first examines how Timor-\nLeste has been affected causally by Indonesia. In this vein, I build upon the\nwork of B. Anderson to show the parallel between the Netherlands and\nIndonesia on the one hand and Indonesia and Timor-Leste on the other.\nSecond, I ignore the time lag and compare the two pairs, examining Timor-\nLeste against Indonesia as a mirror image of Indonesia against the\nNetherlands. From this perspective, distinctive features are clarified: in\nTimor-Leste, nationalism discourse has no ‘past glory’ (like Majapahit in\nIndonesian nationalism discourse), nor does Timor-Leste have enemies\nagainst whom it must struggle to regain its ‘past glory’.
