Her family nomadically moved around\nthe southern part of the Russian Empire. Her encounter with the Kalmyk\npeople in Astrakhan affected her for the rest of her life to some extent. Her\nmother, Elena Gan, was also inspired by differences with the life in her\n“Europe,” when exhausted from her non-cultural—sometimes even barbaric—\nnomadic life.\nShe wrote several novels set in a strange land. Meanwhile, “Caucasian\nnovels,” concerning the Southern Russian lands and peoples, played an important\nrole in the history of the Russian romantic literature in the 1820’s and\n1830’s. Gan followed the mainstream.
