In\nthe 18th century, many foreign scholars and explorers studied the Kalmyk\npeople. The emphasis was on similarities between the Kalmyk people, the\nKhalkha Mongols, and the Tibetan people. In 1771, the Kalmyk people completely\nlost their independence. Russian scholars separated Kalmyk studies\nfrom Mongolian studies and Tibetan studies in the first half of the 19th century.\nMeanwhile, Russian officials began to communicate with the Kalmyk\npeople more frequently.
