S. Basic data\nfor these comparisons consist of responses to the Sentence\nCompletion Test (KSCT-G, compiled by Y. Kataguchi et al.\n1964). (See Tab. 1,2)\nThe Italian data were collected in the field in 1974 by\nYutaka Tani from 284 ninth-grade students in the city of Teramo,\nthe town of Montorio, and the village of Ouercino-all in the\nAbruzzo district of central Italy. The Japanese and U. S. data\nwere collected by me in 1965-67 (See Tab. 3). The Japan\nsample (N=153) includes students from a mountain village in\nYamanashi prefecture as well as from the city of Tokyo. The\nU. S. sample (N=155) is urban, but includes both upper middle\nclass whites and ghetto-area blacks.\nIn this comparative perspective the Italian adolescents exhibit\nthe following characteristics :\n1) A strongly positive attitude both towards father and\ntowards mother. Some sentimental dependency upon the\nmother also is characteristic. (See Tab. 4 and 5. Note that in\nthese tables P=positive, Nu=neutral, Na=negative-active ,\nand Np=negative-passive types of attitudes. Negative-active\nattitudes are, put differently, tendencies towards aggression;\nnegative-passive ones towards avoidance.)\n2) The Italians are less sociable towards strangers than are\nAmericans but more so than are Japanese (Tab. 6).\n3) Males tend to be very positive towards heterosexual relationships, females tend to be negative-passive (Tab. 7).\nAlthough the difference between Italian and American groups\nis not statistically significant, the Italian males show a distinct\npattern of \"flattery\" towards females.\n4) Strongly positive reactions towards people in authority\n(Tab. 8).\n5) Extremely strong negative-active reactions when \"people\nlaugh at them\" (Tab. 9). This probably can be connected with\na strong sense of honor.\n6) Very strong negative-passive (i.e. depressive) feelings\nwhen they \"feel that people do not like them\" (Tab. 10), when\n\"people ignore them\" (Tab . 11), or when \"criticized by others\"\n(Tab. 12).\n7) Among Japanese, intrapunitive feelings dominate in\ncases of failure, but this is unusually weak among Italians (Tab.\n13)—e.g. \"I was wrong,\" \"I was not competent enough,\"—\n\"I am the one responsible\" etc .\n8) Responses to \"My greatest desire is...\" and \"What I\nneed most...\" indicate very strong concern with heterosexual\nrelationships. There also are indications of the importance of\nfamily (Tab. 14, 15).\n9) Italian attitudes towards authority and honor appear\nto be promising topics for further investigation, and should be\nexamined in conjunction with Japanese patterns of reciprocity,\nshame, and giri (sense of obligation).
