 note = {This is a preliminary report on an ethnological and geographical
survey conducted in 1975 on Hammond Island, Torres
Strait.
The aim of this study was to investigate the fishermen's culture
and the societies of the Torres Strait Islands as a transition area
lying between the Asian Continent and the Pacific Islands, and to
make clear the roles played by these island people in cultural
diffusion as well as their processes of acculturation. This report
