Until about 50-60 years ago, according\nto an old record, the festival lasted for 26 days. In 1972, when the\nauthor undertook fieldwork in Kinuran Village, he learned of\nsome ethnohistorically significant rituals performed during the\nmillet harvest festival.\nOn the thirteenth day of the festival a large earthoven was\nset up in the holy place called 'Tsatsapipianu', located outside the\nsettlement. Cakes of newly harvested glutinous millet, which was\ncollected from all the village households, were ritually cooked in\nthe oven. First, batter was prepared by mixing millet flour with\nwater. Then, the batter was poured onto a large leaf, used as a\nwrapper. Finally, the wrapped batter was covered with heated\nstones and cooked. According to the condition of the cooked cakes,\nthe fortune of harvests, of hunting and of the village was foretold.\nOn the following day the same divination, but on a smaller\nscale, was performed at the house of a village priest, 'balakalai'.\nThis augury foretold, in particular, the fortune of hunting.\nThese two rituals were considered to be the most important\namong those performed during the village festival. The author\nexamined records published before the war, regarding the geographical\ndistribution of the rituals. From the records it was apparent\nthat the rituals were practiced only in the Rukai area\nproper, and in a part of the Paiwan regarded as having been\nstrongly influenced by the Rukai culture. Presumably, the custom\nof cooking millet cakes in earthovens at the time of the millet\nharvest festival was originally a distinct element of the Rukai\nculture.\nSeeing the rituals in relation to ethnohistory, three aspects\nare noteworthy: (1) The cooking of ritual food in earthovens may\nbe regarded as a characteristic feature related to a former vegetative\nplanting culture. It is known that in a few Rukai villages taro\nwas usually cooked in the earthoven together with millet in the\nritual described; (2) However, in most villages millet cake rather\nthan taro was cooked as the ritual food. Moreover, this food was\nprepared as a distinctive ritual in the millet harvest festival. Considering\nthese two facts, it appears that the millet culture, which is\npresumed to be a relatively later introduction to this area, adapted\nthe cooking method of a ritual food used in the earlier vegetative\nculture; and (3) In many villages of the Rukai the divination\nperformed in the millet harvest festival was practiced in order to\npray for both a bountiful harvest of crops and for rich hunting.\nOn the last day of the festival, after completing all the ritual procedures,\nall adult male villagers assembled at the village holy place,\nand, after performing a rite, then left on a ritual hunt. The\ndominance of cultural elements associated with hunting among the\nRukai may be explained by the overriding importance of magicoreligious\nland ownership, and the preference for owning hunting\nterritory rather than cultivating land, as has been argued by Prof.\nMabuchi. Moreover, it is assumed that the custom of ritual hunting\nwas already incorporated into the millet culture before it diffused to Formosa from the Chinese mainland.\n","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_9_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15021/00004582","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_9_publisher_33":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国立民族学博物館"}]},"item_9_publisher_34":{"attribute_name":"出版者(英)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"National Museum of Ethnology"}]},"item_9_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN00091943","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_9_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0385-180X","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_9_version_type_16":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"佐々木, 高明"},{"creatorName":"ササキ, コウメイ","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"},{"creatorName":"Sasaki, Komei","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{},{},{},{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-11-19"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"KH_003_2_001.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"4.4 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"KH_003_2_001.pdf","url":"https://minpaku.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4590/files/KH_003_2_001.pdf"},"version_id":"feb07b33-b296-408a-b8be-d3ffb9c1b6bf"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"新粟のチマキと豊猟の占い : ルカイ族・パイワン族のアワ祭り抄","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"新粟のチマキと豊猟の占い : ルカイ族・パイワン族のアワ祭り抄"},{"subitem_title":"Earthoven Cooking and Hunting Rituals in the Millet Harvest Festival of the Rukai, Formosa","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"9","owner":"17","path":["493"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2010-02-16"},"publish_date":"2010-02-16","publish_status":"0","recid":"4590","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["新粟のチマキと豊猟の占い : ルカイ族・パイワン族のアワ祭り抄"],"weko_creator_id":"17","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-20T19:24:21.545198+00:00"}
