The shorelines of the islands are bordered by coral reefs, where various fishing techniques such as the use of nets, hand-lines and diving have been, practiced. This paper studies change in the use of techniques and their accompanying material culture. The diVing activities of Tonoshiro district, Ishigaki City, are limited to within the barrier reefs, where octopus, lobster, seaweed and sh ellfish are exploited. Such species are categorized by local fishermen through their habitats, fishing seasons and other factors..
