This paper presents the differences and similarities in\ntaxonomies of illness given by four Toba-Batak informants. The\ndata were analysed using the KJ method, a technique developed\nby Kawakita Jiro. It is somewhat similar to Berlin's slip sorting\ntask, but differs in the following ways : (1) moving up from terminal\ncategories to upper levels; (2) naming a grouped cluster of paper\nslips; and (3) ordering named clusters according to their relational\ndistances.\nFor the Toba-Batak data the taxonomic differences of illness,\nappearing in the upper level of the taxonomy, seem to be caused by\ndiffering orientations of the informants. One informant made up\na taxonomy from the viewpoint of curing illness and another organized\nit according to the identifying terminologies used in illness.\nThe similarities of each taxonomy given by the four informants at\nlower level indicate that the same groupings of terminal categories\nof illness exist.\nResults of the analysis show that there is no common folk\ntaxonomy of illness among the Toba-Batak, but only clusters of\nterminal categories of illness. They sometimes made new categories\nat the upper level of taxonomy. The categories may therefore be\nconsidered covert. Naming the categories gives a more accurate\nunderstanding of their subconscious thoughts.\nThe Toba-Batak people did not feel it necessary to make up\ntaxonomy of illness. There is, therefore, no common taxonomy\namong them, but potential taxonomies which may become overt\nin a particular situation.
