From ethnological and geographical\nperspectives, the rural house is an important key to settlement\nstructure. The typical characteristics of the roof and floor plan\nof rural houses differ among regions, and reflect specific aspects\nof the local physical-socio-cultural environment, as well as the\ndynamic change of life in a rural and mountainous area.\nThe Shiiba and Mera Region is situated deep in the mountains\nof Kyushu (Fig. 1). Shiiba and Higashi Mera village is\nlocated in an area of steep slopes and valleys with so little level\nland that houses seem to cling to the slope and are supported by\nstone wall embankments, and Nishi Mera village is located on a\nsmall river terrace.\nThe floor plan is of the house attenuated and consists of\nrooms lined in a single row. A typical Shiiba house has 3 main\nrooms plus a kitchen (Fig. 3,4). Whereas a Mera house characteristically\nconsists of 2 principal rooms and a kitchen (Fig.\n5,8,9). All the rooms are arranged in a row and are divided by\nsliding partitions that can be removed to create a single large\nroom. Kagura, the sacred masked dance, is traditionally held\nin the large room, locally known as dei.\nMethod :\n1) The region selected for fieldwork is in the mountainous\nhinterland of Kyushu (Shiiba and Mera Region) ;\n2) The object of the field research was the study of rural houses\nin a mountain agricultural village;\n3) The most commonly occuring house types in the area were\nchosen rather than the old and atypical forms;\n4) In addition, lifestyles were analyzed by means of interviews.\nDivision of the report:\n1.
