From ethnological and geographical perspectives, the rural house is an important key to settlement structure. The typical characteristics of the roof and floor plan of rural houses differ among regions, and reflect specific aspects of the local physical-socio-cultural environment, as well as the dynamic change of life in a rural and mountainous area. The Shiiba and Mera Region is situated deep in the mountains of Kyushu (Fig. 1). Shiiba and Higashi Mera village is located in an area of steep slopes and valleys with so little level land that houses seem to cling to the slope and are supported by stone wall embankments, and Nishi Mera village is located on a small river terrace. The floor plan is of the house attenuated and consists of rooms lined in a single row. A typical Shiiba house has 3 main rooms plus a kitchen (Fig. 3,4). Whereas a Mera house characteristically consists of 2 principal rooms and a kitchen (Fig. 5,8,9). All the rooms are arranged in a row and are divided by sliding partitions that can be removed to create a single large room. Kagura, the sacred masked dance, is traditionally held in the large room, locally known as dei. Method : 1) The region selected for fieldwork is in the mountainous hinterland of Kyushu (Shiiba and Mera Region) ; 2) The object of the field research was the study of rural houses in a mountain agricultural village; 3) The most commonly occuring house types in the area were chosen rather than the old and atypical forms; 4) In addition, lifestyles were analyzed by means of interviews.
