This phenomenon became conspicuous,\nhowever, only after the mid-twentieth century. Prior to that\ntime, the collection of wild edible plants, especially nuts, and the\ncultivation of various cereals, in addition to rice-farming were\nimportant means of food procurement.\nThis report covers the Hida area of central Honshu. The\nHida area was selected for field research because the vegetation\nbelts are easy to distinguish and because an ethnography (Hidagofudoki),\nrecording life at the end of the 19th century, was obtained.\nHidagofudoki records precisely the amounts of rice, cereals\n(millet [hie and awa]), and nuts (chestnuts, acorns and buckeyes)\nfor all villages of the Hida area. The results of this study illustrate\nthe combination of resources used in food procurement in\nJapanese mountain villages at the end of the nineteenth century.\nThe following main points emerged from the study :\n1. 55% of the 413 villages in the area obtained their staple\nfood from rice, millets and nuts, whereas the staple food of 28%\nwas rice and other cereals;\n2. The combination of agriculture and nut-gathering had\nan ecologically based vertical distribution, as is represented by the\nwild vegetation. Rice and other cereal cultivation is distributed\nbetween 400-600 m; at higher elevations the combination of\nrice and other cereal cultivation and nut-gathering occured ;\nand between 800-1000 m the combination of cereal cultivation\nand nut-gathering appeared. At elevation above 1000 m there\nexisted villages which cultivated only cereals.
