In 1978, some 500 Satawalese possessed 51\nsingle outrigger canoes (wa). Canoes are locally classified into\n4 major types; wa serak, man ni pwin, wa fatul, and ra eu. Wa serak\nis the largest and is mainly used for interisland vayages, whereas\nthe other, smaller canoes are used for fishing.\nSatawalese society is composed of 8 yainang (matrilineal,\nexogamous, nonlocalized clans) which consist of 16 lineages.\nMen belong to two different social groups:\n(1) Mzvan ni foto: wherein a man affiliates with. his own\nmatrilineal descent group (lineage);\nand\n(2) Mwaan ni reto: in which a man belongs to his wife's\nlineage after marriage.\nThose two categories are the basic principles regulating a\nman's activities. Data on canoe-making and voyaging are\npresented to clarify possible relationships between social and\nlabor groups involved in canoe use.\nData analysis indicates the following points.
