Subsequently several contemporary studies of\n\"vertical control\" have appeared . Three types of \"vertical control\"\nhave been analyzed by Brush [1977] and four by Onuki [1978a].\nThis article examines \"vertical control\" both from technological\nand from socio-cultural perspectives, using data obtained during\nfield research carried out in Marcapata district, Quispicanchis\nprovince, department of Cuzco, Peru. Field work was conducted\nfor some six months in 1978-1979.\nThe district of Marcapata is divided administratively and socioculturally\ninto four agrico-pastoral communities. All the corn-\n. munities are situated on the eastern slope of the Andes and each\ncontains various ecological zones, ranging in a short distance from\nsub-tropical rainforest to the nival, through the ceja vegetation zone.\nThese different ecological zones are exploited and managed by\nmembers of each community and economic self-sufficiency is\nachieved on the community level.\nIn this article the socio-cultural characteristics of the four\ncommunities of Marcapata and the different ecological zones, in\nrelation to the exploitation of natural resources, are first outlined.\nNext the relationship between ecological zonation and native\nconcepts of the various habitats is discussed. The agrico-pastoral\nsystems, including maize and potato farming, practiced in the different\necological zones, are analyzed.
