Yauca and the R. Caplina. Nine sites were\nvisited to make general observations on the environment and\nstructures, as well as to collect surface materials.,\nIn this area the western slope of the Andes, sometimes called\nthe \"Far South Coast\", shows a development of indigenous cultures\ndistinct from elsewhere in the Central Andes. It is thought that the\nbiological and physical characteristics of this region precluded the\nauthochthonous emergence of agricultural society, and it is\nsupposed that the first appearance of agricultural society in this\nregion was around the Middle Horizon (ca. A.D.- 600) It is my\nthesis that advanced technology such as terracing and canal\nirrigation, accomplished by the Wari people, made possible the\ndevelopment of the region, hence the societies which developed\nthese may have comprised a type of colony of the Wari Empire,\nlater of Expansive Tiahuanaco Culture. Perhaps because of this\nthe most archaeological sites are situated near a present-day human\nsettlement.
