Based on\ntypical characteristics of roof and house plans, farmstead types\nshow regional differentiation and reflect specific aspects of the local\nway of life.\nThe rapidly-changing rural houses of Europe have been studied\nfrom a wide range of perspectives including ethnology, geography\nand related fields.\nI. A Review : Studies of European Rural Houses\nNumerous studies- have been made on European rural houses,\nbut many of earlier ones dealt only with a visual house landscape\nor classification by shapes. But following the assertions and\ninterpretation of W. Muller-Wille and A. Demangeon a dynamic\ntrend emerged in rural house-type studies, focusing on such themes\nas building materials, roofing and house plan, functional aspects,\nthe genesis of house types and modes of transmission of culture.\nII. Open-Air Museums in Europe (Especially Rural Houses\n\"Folk Architecture\" in Open-Air Museums)\nThis is a report of an ethnological and geographical survey\nconducted in 1971, 1978, of 37 European Open-Air Museums.\nIII.
