It has led to an\nunmanageable situation for administrators and scholars alike.\nToday, this mass of new information can be compiled as a\ncomputerized, machine-readable database. As a pilot project,\nour team began to develop a database on the Jomon shellmounds,\nunder a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research from the Ministry of\nEducation, Science and Culture (1977).\nOne reason for taking-up this subject was that there existed\nalready a large volume of information suitable for rapid transformation\ninto machine-readable format. Usually this is the most expensive\nand time-consuming process in assembling a database.
