In the Andes of South America it grows wild in\nmarshy localities from the coastal lowlands to the highlands. In\nthe Andes it has been exploited by man, as is evident from archaeological\nand historical records. The totora is still locally important,\nand is used, inter alia, for food, forage, fuel, house building (wall and\nroof), mats, floats and sails for fishing, and for the construction of\nartificial islands to provide dwelling space.\nBased on fieldwork conducted three times, from 1977 to 1979,\nthis article discusses the taxonomy, uses and cultivation of totora\nreed in highland Ecuador (among the Otavalo people), the\nnorthern coast of Peru and the Lake Titicaca area of Peru (Uro),\nand in Bolivia (Aymara).
