However, being sun plants\nthey are rare in primary forests.\nSeveral researchers analyzed charred wood from 12 sites,\nranging in age from the Earliest to the Late Jomon Periods, and\nfound charred chestnut wood in all sites and charred walnut wood\nin 2 sites. In addition, at the Torihama site the Early Jomon\nsediment contained seeds of many sun plants, whereas the Earliest\nsediment contained few. This seems to suggest a difference in the\nresidential style between the two periods; temporary gathering\ncamps in the Earliest Jomon vs. sedentary villages in the Early\nJomon. Inhabitants of the sedentary villages seem to have exploited\nnearby primary forests, converting them secondary forest,\nwhich should have provided suitable habitats for chestnuts and\nwalnuts. This seems to have been the most likely first step toward\nintentional food production by man.
