Two principal\nresearch techniques were used to derive data. First, direct interviews\nwere conducted with some 20 male and female elementary\nand middle level pupils, as well as with 4 pupils in a French\nschool, and also with some teachers and parents of the pupils.\nSecond, a movie record was made of the pupils interviewed (as\nwell as of other pupils), both in class and at home, to obtain\ndetailed data on the interpersonal peer-group relationships\namong the pupils. The film was later analysed to classify the\nproblems encountered among three groups of pupils.\nResearch indicated that the principal interpersonal problems\narose among pupils who had entered the school directly from\nJapan and those who had formerly been enrolled in a French\nschool. The pupils enrolled in a French school are not able to\nfit into the Japanese educational system, which means that they\nmust study hard for the entrance examinations of the Japanese\nuniversities. Thus, the Japanese school plays a role in the reeducation\nfor re-entrance into Japanese society when the pupils\nreturn home from France.\nThose pupils who had lived also in a third country (and were\nusually English-speaking) after leaving Japan and before entering\nthe school in Paris, were either not involved or only peripherally\ninvolved in the interpersonal problems of the other two groups.\nRather, this English-speaking group adopted a somewhat neutral\nand detached stance vis-à-vis their peers.\nResearch among the parents revealed two main types by\naspiration; (1) imbuing their children with an international\nawareness; and (2) a principal concern with rigorously schooling\ntheir children to pass the Japanese university entrance examinations\nand for whom, therefore, developing a sense of internationalism\nwas a relatively minor interest. But with just a few years\nof experience overseas, those children could not develop a good\nsense of internationalism.\nMost parents interviewed would agree to sending their\nchildren to a French school were they to stay in Paris for short\ntime, usually 3-5 years.
