The first part locates the sierra\nMixe market system within the total .Oaxaca market networks, the\nMixe system being compared with the region model of Chiapas.\nMixe dependence on the Mitla and Yalalag Zapotecs is the consequence\nof the developed economic specialization in the Zapotec\nvillages, and the monopolistic activities of the Zapotec merchants\nin the Mixe markets who are in turn controlled by the Oaxaca\ncity merchants. Thus in the second part of the paper the underdeveloped\neconomic specialization in Mixe villages is constrasted\nwith the rich specialization in Mitla and Yalalag.
