After several group migrations the\nHakkas arrived in their present-day main areas of residence, in\nsouthern Jiangxi [Kiangsi] Province, northeastern Guangdong\nProvince, and western Fujian Province. Smaller groups of Hakka\nreside in other districts of Guangdong Province, Guangxi [Kwangsi],\nZhuang [Chuang] Autonomous Region, Sichuan [Szechwan]\nProvince, and Taiwan Province, among other areas.\nMy fieldwork on Hakka culture, together with the research of\nother scholars, in addition to demonstrating that the forms of pronunciation\nof the language spoken in the ancient Central Plains are\nstill used in the present-day Hakka language, also revealed that,\nfor example, some characteristics of the Northern culture are continued\nin the structure of the traditional Hakka house, and that besides\ntheir strong preference for rice, the \"Mountain Songs\" of the Hakkas\nhave been influenced by the Southern culture of the districts into\nwhich they migrated.\nThe mixture of Northern and Southern Chinese cultural elements\nis a characteristic feature of Hakka culture. However, the\ncultural elements shared between the Hakkas and the Han exceed\nthose peculiar to the Hakka alone, thus permitting the conclusion\nthat Hakka culture is just one of many local cultures which compose\nthe Han culture. There are few cultural characteristics that can\nbe used to distinguish the Hakkas as a nationality independent of\nthe Han.\nNOTES :\n1.
