The paper consists of three\nparts; (1) typology of buildings, the process of building, and the\nsystem of measurement; (2) repairing and reconstruction of buildings;\n(3) and specific, traditional knowledge, called rong.\nBuildings on Elato Atoll are usually constructed differently according\nto function and purpose. Three basic types are distinguished\nlocally : imw, fale, and mwaluumw. The imw category includes the\ndwelling house, spirit house, menstruation house, and delivery house;\nfale denotes the canoe house and meeting house; and mwaluumw\nmainly refers to the cooking house.\nThe Elato measurement system used in building construction\nplays important roles in determining the sizes of the buildings as well\nas in the constituent parts, such as longitudinal tie-beams, tie-beams,\nridge-pole, king-posts, and rafters. Measurement is mainly based on\nthe \"halving system\", especially important being (1) the length of\nlongitudinal tie-beams, (2) the ratio between longitudinal tie-beam\nand tie-beam, (3) the ratio between tie-beam and king-post, and (4)\nintervals in laying rafters.\nThe traditional knowledge applied to building repairing and\nreconstruction is called rongolibaang. It permits a small group of\npeople to quickly reconstruct a building without taking it entirely to\npieces. This knowledge deals with six major parts of the building;\nsupporting-posts, longitudinal tie-beams, tie-beams, rafters, ridgepole,\nand the whole roof.\nTwo types of knowledge are locally distinguished; reepiy (common\nknowledge) and rong (closed knowledge which is kept by a specific\nmembership and concerns the spirit, yalius). This rong is esoteric\nknowledge and is considered to be handed down directly from yalius.\nIt is inherited according to specific rules.\nSince 1954, Elato has been Christianized and indigenous beliefs\nhave declined.
