However, the origin and\nfunctions of the system remain unclear, principally because these\ncommunities have multi-dimensional characters in terms of caste\norganization, socio-economic function and religious-cultural meaning.\nThis paper attempts an analysis of these inter-caste organizations\nfrom two principal perspectives. The first is a focus on intradivisional\ncohesion through occupational factors. The functions of these communities\nas economic organizations has been discussed by students\nof South Indian history. Were these divisions more than \"guilds\"\nin socio-economic terms, some unifying factors may be revealed by\noccupational membership. The second perspective supposes that\neach division has some traditional background in a religious and/or\ncultural context. Severe factional conflicts often arose whenever\nthese two groups walked in procession along their own streets and on\nthose of their rivals, particularly for marriages or funerals. The\nmajor reasons for collision between the two factions were that each\nclaimed the higher social status and the exclusive usage of caste\ninsignia, such as banners, flags, palanquins, ornaments, and other\nritual tools. According to caste legends each insignia or symbol acts\nexplicitly in a historical and ritual context.\nHere, an attempt is made to gain insight into the significance of\nthe Valangai and Iclafigai organizations as the \"shared-legend\" system,\nby considering occupational and legendary factors together.
