However, the origin and functions of the system remain unclear, principally because these communities have multi-dimensional characters in terms of caste organization, socio-economic function and religious-cultural meaning. This paper attempts an analysis of these inter-caste organizations from two principal perspectives. The first is a focus on intradivisional cohesion through occupational factors. The functions of these communities as economic organizations has been discussed by students of South Indian history. Were these divisions more than "guilds" in socio-economic terms, some unifying factors may be revealed by occupational membership. The second perspective supposes that each division has some traditional background in a religious and/or cultural context. Severe factional conflicts often arose whenever these two groups walked in procession along their own streets and on those of their rivals, particularly for marriages or funerals. The major reasons for collision between the two factions were that each claimed the higher social status and the exclusive usage of caste insignia, such as banners, flags, palanquins, ornaments, and other ritual tools. According to caste legends each insignia or symbol acts explicitly in a historical and ritual context. Here, an attempt is made to gain insight into the significance of the Valangai and Iclafigai organizations as the "shared-legend" system, by considering occupational and legendary factors together. Further, the change of meaning and value from a Right-Left horizontal relationship to a Higher-Lower vertical relationship is also examined. Through these analyses the vital role played by the ceremonial places when the rival groups demonstrate their superiority is clarified.}, pages = {303--348}, title = {南インドの右手・左手集団と祭礼騒擾 : カースト伝承と儀礼を中心に}, volume = {7}, year = {1982}, yomi = {シゲマツ, シンジ} }
