Seven emic studies (Austerlitz 1959; Berlin 1963;\nBrichoux 1977; Conklin 1962; Krup & Altmann 1961 and\nMcKaughan 1959) and three etic studies (Buehler & Freeze 1966;\nForchheimer 1951 and Ingram 1978) on personal deictics are evaluated\nhere. But it is apparent that componential analysis of personal\ndeictics is rather arbitrary or intuitive in the emic studies. However,\na combination of emic and etic studies is more powerful than either\ntypes of study individually.\nThrough discussion of those studies, I formulate a new universally\napplicable person deictic system. This system consists of four person\ncategories, \"Dialoquent person (D-person)\", \"Loquent person (Lperson)\",\n\"Audient person (Au-person\") and \"Absent person (Abperson)\"\nto replace the usual Western system such as 1st person\ninclusive, 1st person exclusive, 2nd person and 3rd person, respectively.\nThe most important difference between the new and old systems is\nthat 1st person inclusive is treated as an independent person category.\nIn addition, the logical basis for the system is exemplified for D-person\nas an independent person. For enumeration, singularity, duality,\n\"triality\" and plurality are adopted instead of other number systems,\nbecause others are unable to deal with the single form of D-person,\nsuch as Maranao, HanunOo and Lakota, for example.\nLastly, Ab-person is unsuitable as a universal person category;\nAb-person is an essential person category in deixis, because it is quite\ndifferent from the other categories, and demonstratives are actually\nused instead of Ab-person in many instances.
