However, with few exceptions, the correspondences of the basic vocabulary of NH and the Bird's Head (BH) area of Irian Jaya have not yet been demonstrated, principally because the protoforms of the basic vocabulary have not yet been reconstructed. This article demonstrates the consonant correspondences of all NH languages and illustrates lenition, the main principle, together with other principles governing those correspondences, based on my field data plus the computer "KWIC Index" of most texts ever printed.
