It was one of the first ethnological museums in Japan. Shibusawa and his followers collected the folk tools and utensils of Japan, Sakhalin, Korea, China and Micronesia, and in particular foot-wear, clothing, farming tools, fishing implements, basketry and toys. His collection amounted to ca. 12000 specimens in 1937.
