In dance the body is used in different ways from those\nemployed in daily work movements. In one sense, dance could\nbe defined as composed of movements not found in ordinary\ndaily work. Dance must be something different. The\nessential point is that dance movements are articulated, and\nby this articulation dance becomes something out of the ordinary,\nor unusual.\nThe other perspective regards dance movements as being\nclosely related to routine work movements. Many authors claim\nthat the movement style in dance represents a crystallization\nof the frequent patterns of everyday activity.\nThese two view points are apparently contradictory;\nbut this is, in fact, not so. That is, movements performed\nalmost automatically or unconsciously in the everyday life are,\nin dance, performed consciously. Therefore they articulate.\nDance movements themselves are rooted on the habitual\nmovements of a people's daily activity. So dance activity and\neveryday activity are not entirely distinct. The criterion which\ndistinguishes dance movements from daily activity is that , in\nthe former, movements are performed consciously and with\narticulation.\nIn this note I use as an example some particular postures\nand movements of Senegalese (Ful6e, Wolof and Serer)\nwomen's dances. In their dances, the upper torso is lightly\ninclined forward and the pelvis is tilted downward.
