In the\n1860's a great deal of concrete information about Japanese\nlife began to spread to the west.\nThis study, which includes a discussion of the Western\nperspective on the Kimono leads in to the problem of the\nwestern definition of occidental clothing by pointing out the\nparticular thought and aesthetic consciousness concerning\nclothing in general.\nThe Western cultures discussed here are those of Western\nEurope (English. French) and American culture.\nIn a later, discussion we will try to discover how to define\nthe Western tradition of clothing, and if in fact certain distinctions\nexist in this definition.\nKimono has been modified from 1860 to the present, and\nWestern consciousness concerning customs of dress has also\nchanged. These two evolutions of the object observed that\nis the Kimono, and the observer, Western culture, make the\nrelationship between the two difficult to analyze.\nWestern culture in the 19th century paid more attention\nto Japanese morality, as reflected by Japanese clothing, than\nto the Kimono itself.\nWe can perceive the fundamental difference between the\nKimono and Western clothing by analyzing the aspects of the\nKimono accepted by the West, together with the Europeanized\nKimono.\nViewed architecturally, Western clothing can be consider-\ned a wall-like structure and a massive-structure, the foundation\nof Western aesthetic consciousness having been based on the\nphysical mass of the body.\nOn the other hand, the Kimono has a pillar-like structure.\nThe geometrical forms of the Kimono are organized around\npillars. One pillar, for example, is the long neckband of the\nKimono.
