Jeongjo (正祖) wanted to make an innovation\nin the versification part of the imperial examinations, as part\nof his stylistic movement. Prior to that time versification in\nthese examinations was limited to rhymes in the level tone.\nWithin his innovation entering tone rhymes were permitted.\nThis demanded the compilation of a new rhyming dictionary in\nwhich not only level, rising and falling tones, but also the entering\ntone, were arranged in their proper places, and not simply\nappended at the end. Gyujangjeonun was published to meet this\ndemand.
