Because of\nthe striking similarity of some words to the orthography of\nTibetan and its complicated morphological processes, the\nlanguage has long attracted scholarly attention. In no previous\nstudy, however, has there been any clear-cut description of the\nlanguage's complexity—the verb system, above all, shows such\na puzzling structure that no earlier works on rGyarong seem to\nhave succeeded in analyzing it convincingly.\nNeither has the historical/genetic position of rGyarong\nbeen well-elucidated. It has been classified in the Tibetan\ngroup simply because of the similarity of a limited number of\nrGyarong words to Written Tibetan, whereas the affiliation of\nthe rest of the lexicon has gone unstudied. My purpose in writing\nthis paper is to counteract this bias.\nThe most puzzling part of the rGyarong morphological\nprocesses is the final verb phrase, which has the following general\nstructure : (ka)-(P1)-P2-P3-(P4)-ROOT-(S1)-S2, where seven\naffixes play significant roles to specify agent(s), patient(s), goal(s),\nbeneficiary, aspect, direction of act, manner of act, and so on.\nThis paper describes the adverbial prefixes which appear in\nthe P4 position : causative markers (se-, sye-, wa-, re-), a mutual\nact marker (nge-), repetitive act markers (ra- and na-), an\nautomatic/uncontrollable act marker (ma-), an objectivizer (sa-),\na progressive marker (ne-) and a reflexive marker (ne-).
