Woofanuw denotes \"to see the island,\"\nand comprises a system of island orientation as observed from an\nisland using 32 directional terminologies. Woofanuw is specific\nto each island, and my data cover the area extending from Yap,\nthe westernmost island to Ponape, the easternmost. The sea\nareas drawn from these islands' woofanuw system further include\nmost of the Caroline Islands, the Marshall Islands to the east, the\nMariana Islands to the north and even the Philippines, to the west.\nSome directional errors emerge when a comparison is made\nwith the actual compass bearing of the stars, and also directions\non a marine chart. However, the Satawalese can compensate\nfor these during navigation.\nIndividual differences of the woofanuw system demonstrate\nthat even the most practical, and, per se, uniform knowledge is\ntransmitted through different channels or schools of navigation.\nMost islands and reefs involved in the woofanuw system exist,\nbut sometimes mythical islands which evoke metaphor are\nincluded.
