The orthography, once\nsettled, did not change except for some letters for [p'], [t'], [s],\netc. (Table 1). In the eighteenth century the Yucatec grammarian\nPedro Beltran tried to change the writing system\nsystematically, under the influence of the reform of the Spanish\northography. In the nineteenth century Carrillo y Ancona\nintroduced a new orthography, but with the exception of dz for\n[¢], its system was not accepted by those who followed.\nMeanwhile, Yucatec Maya indians left many documents in\nwhich they used traditional orthography but spelled words in\nmany different ways (see, p. 103). Nowadays the Yucatec Maya\nuse four major and different systems—traditional, international,\nCordemex, and Cartilla-Bible.
